Get your mind out of the gutter…but seriously fake til you make it. A phrase I first heard a few years ago from my dear friend Yvette. She knew things were rough for me, and was trying to encourage me to fake being as happy as I could be for as long as I could because eventually you’ll find yourself happy.
While these seems like ridiculous advice, its actually scientifically sound. It has been proven time and time again that smiling whether your feeling match the happy exterior will actually end up making you feel happier.
As I mentioned the other day, I decided I need to be the change that I wanted to see. This meant for me, despite my feelings of being overwhelmed, I needed to put a smile on my face. Maintaining a positive attitude all day did leave me completely drained at the end but at the same time, I feel like it was a little infectious…even by phone. One vendor called said he was having a rough day, by the end of the call we both had a few laughs and he sounded like he was in better spirits in the end.
When things are the roughest, when all you want to do is cry, just try for 15 minutes to smile through the pain, sorrow, hurt, frustration, or anger. If you still want to cry or scream after 15 minutes of smiling, calmly excuse yourself from polite company, find yourself a private (preferably soundproof space) and cry your eyes out or scream until your throat hurts…then fix your face, straighten your hair, dab on a bit of lipstick and smile as you walk back in the room.
If all else fails think of this lady…she always makes me laugh.
